Minnesota is rightly proud of its 12,000-plus lakes,
rivers, and streams. This is the place to come seeking
outdoor recreation and fun in the sun. Resorts, cabins,
fishing camps, and hunting lodges abound especially
in the northern two-thirds of the state. Within minutes
from the Twin Cities--Minneapolis and St. Paul--it
can seem like another world, full of fresh air, pine
scents, and wildflowers.
According to the Department of Natural
Resources there are over 11,800 lakes (10 acres or larger)
in Minnesota. Minnesota's lakes and rivers provide more
shoreline than California, Florida and Hawaii combined.
Tourism is a key sector of Minnesota's
economy, generating $9.2 billion annually. It's a statewide
industry, part of the economic mix in the Twin Cities
area and in cities and towns throughout Minnesota.
Voyageurs National Park, along Minnesota's
northern border, is dominated by its 30 lakes. Visitors
explore the park by excursion boats, houseboats, motorboats,
canoes and kayaks.
Minnesota's 66 state parks preserve
some of the most beautiful scenery in the "land of lakes." They
are popular destinations for hiking, camping, biking,
swimming, fishing, birding, picknicking, cross-country
skiing and showshoeing.
Minnesota has more miles of paved bike
trails than any other state, offering easygoing biking
through scenic
corridors.
The state has designated twenty Minnesota
Scenic Byways along over 2,000 miles of roadway. The
beautiful North
Shore Scenic Drive along Lake Superior is also a
nationally designated All-American Road.
With 11,842 lakes and many miles of
rivers, Minnesota is a popular fishing destination. Walleye,
northern
pike, bass, muskies, trout, catfish and panfish are
among the popular catches.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
(BWCAW) in northeastern Minnesota is the greatest wilderness
canoeing
and fishing area in the world. BWCAW offers a unique
opportunity to explore nature far from the sights
and sounds of civilization, paddling and fishing forest-rimmed
lakes and camping along the lakeshores.
Among the 480 golf courses in Minnesota
are many championship courses by today's top golf designers.
